What Happens When the Water Becomes Deadly?

The first trumpet scorched the earth. The second trumpet devastated the sea.

Now the third trumpet strikes the fresh water people depend upon to survive.

John sees something falling from heaven:

“A great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky.” (Revelation 8:10)

John calls the star Wormwood. Then something terrifying happens.

A third of the rivers and springs become bitter. And the water becomes so deadly that many people die from drinking it. This isn’t simply another environmental disaster.

It strikes one of humanity’s most basic needs: water.

And if the second trumpet shows us the destruction of the sea, the third trumpet brings the judgment onto land and into the water people drink.

The question isn’t simply, “What is Wormwood?” The bigger question is:

What happens to humanity when the water that sustains life becomes deadly?

What is the Blazing Star Falling From the Sky? (Revelation 8:10)

Keep in mind that John is doing his best to describe visions of future events from a first century perspective.

(Verse 10) As the the third trumpet sounds, John sees what looks like “a great star, blazing like a torch,” falling from the sky. Could John’s vision be showing him intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) reentering the atmosphere and descending upon their targets?

John doesn’t really know what he’s looking at but he does the best he can with what he sees.

An ICBM ascends into space to achieve the speeds it needs to arrive at the far destination it’s programmed to travel. It’s trajectory will take it through space. Once it approaches the target, it’ll reenter the atmosphere descending upon its preprogrammed mark.

These ICBM’s would appear to any reasonable person as a star looking like a blazing torch. Especially as it encounters the atmosphere on its way to earth. It’s likely given what we understand so far, John is witnessing mankind’s own destruction through nuclear capabilities. The same nuclear capabilities that have existed for decades but whose use has been held back by the restraining arm of God.

While the Bible is not clear what this symbolic imagery represents, this remains interpretation. What we know for certain is that the fresh water of the planet will be severly impacted according to the next verse.

What is Wormwood? (Revelation 8:11)

(Verse 11) In order to understand what wormwood is and how it relates to John’s vision, we need to look closely at this verse.

Wormwood is associated with bitterness.

The word “wormwood” is used nine times in the Bible. It’s only used once in the New Testament. The remainder are found in the Old Testament.

Wormwood is a bitter herb that was used in making medicine in ancient times. It was recognized by the Israelites as a bitter tasting substance. In all its uses throughout biblical times, it was used in reference to bitter water.

Notice closely what John records in this verse. The blazing star that he sees is called Wormwood. It doesn’t say that it’s going to contain wormwood. Just that it’s called Wormwood. What’s the difference?

In naming the star Wormwood, Jesus is giving John the ability to understand some of what he’s seeing. John, being an Israelite, would know what the word wormwood would mean. This would allow John to understand the next verse which describes the bitter water as a result of the star.

Jesus did the same exact thing with His disciples when He was with them. In his teachings to the disciples and His followers, He would often reference Galilean culture, tradition and practices in His teachings to help them understand some of what Christ was talking about.

These hints made sense to the people of Jesus’ day since he taught mostly to the Galileans in the region of Galilee.

To John, if wormwood means bitter water and the star is named Wormwood, then it makes sense that the fresh water of the earth will turn bitter in taste

The water will become deadly. This brings the possibility of radiation poisoning into the picture.

When the Water People Depend Upon Becomes Deadly

Humanity can survive without many things. We can live without electricity and the internet. We can even live without automobiles. And survival without food can occur for a limited period of time.

But we cannot survive without water.

That makes the third trumpet especially sobering.

John sees a great star, blazing like a torch, fall from heaven. The star is called Wormwood, and a third of the rivers and springs becomes bitter.

Then John gives us a chilling detail:

“Many people died from the waters that had become bitter.” (Revelation 8:11)

This judgment doesn’t simply damage the environment. It strikes something humanity cannot live without. Suddenly, finding clean water becomes more important than money, possessions, and political power.

Water becomes survival.

1. Fresh Water Becomes Scarce

Rivers and springs provide water for drinking, agriculture, livestock, sanitation, and countless other necessities of life. When a third of these water sources becomes bitter, the consequences would extend far beyond the water itself.

Communities would struggle to find safe water. Agriculture would suffer. Livestock would be threatened. Entire regions could face desperate shortages.

The third trumpet reveals just how quickly something we take for granted can become desperately valuable.

2. Food Supplies Come Under Pressure

Water and food are inseparable. Crops and animals require water. Food production requires water. When fresh water becomes scarce or unsafe, the food supply becomes vulnerable.

And notice the progression of Revelation:

1. The first trumpet damages the land.
2. The second trumpet devastates the sea.
3. The third trumpet strikes the fresh water.

The judgment is now reaching land, sea, and fresh water.

What happens next could affect nearly every part of human life.

3. Humanity Begins to Pay the Price

John doesn’t merely say the water becomes unpleasant. He tells us that many people die because of it. The consequences become personal. Parents search for safe water for their children. Communities struggle to protect remaining sources.

Fear spreads. Desperation grows. And humanity discovers something we often forget:

We are far more dependent upon God’s creation than we realize.

Is God’s Wrath Man’s Self Made Destruction?

In light of what we’ve learned, how should we look at this devastation that is to come? First and most deservedly, we can give thanks and praise to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For this period of seven years (Tribulation), ordained by God in the book of Daniel, has not been assigned to those believers in Jesus Christ as their Blessed Hope and Deliverer of salvation.

Should we look at these events as the wrath of God upon mankind or God allowing man to destroy himself? Remember, God is still in control. Either way, He allows events to occur as He sees fit according to His will.

So the question becomes, is God bringing this wrath upon mankind through supernatural events? Or is God removing His restraining power over humanity in order to allow it to destroy itself?

Could Wormwood Be Connected to Nuclear Warfare?

This raises an important question.

Could the third trumpet be revealing the consequences of nuclear warfare?

It is certainly possible to see how that connection can be made by those who study prophecy.

A nuclear conflict could contaminate water supplies through radioactive fallout and other forms of environmental destruction. From our modern perspective, John’s description of a blazing object falling from the sky and producing deadly water naturally raises questions about whether he could be seeing something connected to modern warfare.

Keep in mind. Revelation does not say “nuclear weapon.” It does not mention missiles, radiation, or nuclear explosions.

It wouldn’t because it would be well beyond anything John would understand. This is one of the reasons why most of prophecy is given to John in pictures God knew that people today would seek the knowledge they needed to better understand what John saw.

“But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.” (Daniel 12:4)

John describes what he sees: a great star blazing like a torch, falling from heaven, and waters becoming bitter.

The nuclear interpretation is therefore an interpretation of the imagery—not something the text explicitly states.

Whether God accomplishes this judgment supernaturally, through human technology, or through some means we cannot yet understand, the message remains the same:

The trumpet sounds. The judgment comes. God is sovereign over it. And the consequences are devastating.

The Bible Has Always Warned Us About the Human Heart

This possibility should not surprise us when we consider what Scripture says about mankind.

The psalmist wrote:

“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 14:1–3)

Paul echoes these same words in Romans:

“As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.’” (Romans 3:10–12)

Scripture gives us a consistent picture.

When humanity rejects its Creator, human power does not become safer. Pride, sin, and violence grows. And humanity repeatedly uses the power it possesses to harm others.

Could this be part of what John is seeing in the first three trumpet judgments?

1. The first trumpet strikes the land.
2. The second trumpet strikes the sea.
3. The third trumpet strikes the fresh water.

And if Wormwood represents the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare, John may be witnessing something beyond a single weapon or explosion.

He may be seeing the consequences of a world that has been given over to its own destructive desires.

Yet even then, God remains sovereign. He sets the boundaries and determines the timing. And He ultimately brings human rebellion to an end.

Humanity may possess the power to destroy itself—but it does not possess the power to control God’s prophetic plan.

That is what makes the third trumpet so sobering.

Closing Reflection: What If Your Words Become Someone’s Lifeline?

Friends, Revelation was not given to us simply so we could understand what is coming.

It was given so we would be ready—and so we would warn others.

Imagine someone you know facing those judgments because they never trusted Christ. Maybe it is a family member, friend, neighbor or a coworker. Someone who heard you talk about Jesus but never took it seriously.

What if the words you share with them today become the seed God uses to draw them to Christ tomorrow when the Tribulation begins? They may dismiss you now and may think prophecy is too frightening. Or maybe they believe there is plenty of time.

But God’s Word has a way of remaining in the heart.

And during the Tribulation, when the world begins experiencing the very things you warned them about, those words may suddenly take on an entirely different meaning.

They may remember the Scripture you shared, the conversation you had, or your warning about Jesus returning to judge. And that seed may finally take root.

God will continue to reach people during the Tribulation through the 144,000, the two witnesses, and the angels proclaiming His message. His mercy continues even while His judgment falls.

But the Tribulation Will Not Last Forever

At the end of those seven year Tribulation, God’s prophetic program reaches its appointed conclusion. The opportunity to turn to Christ during that period will not remain open indefinitely.

That makes what we do today incredibly important. We don’t know which conversation God will use, which Scripture will stay with someone, which warning will eventually lead someone to Christ.

So share it anyway. Don’t be ashamed of prophecy. Don’t be afraid to talk about the coming judgment. And don’t forget the purpose behind the warning:

We aren’t warning people about Revelation because we want them to be afraid. We’re warning them because we want them to be saved.

The greatest thing you can do for someone facing eternity is point them to Jesus Christ while there is still time. Your words may be only a seed today—but in God’s hands, that seed could become someone’s lifeline tomorrow.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Give us courage to share Your prophetic Word while there is still time. Let the warnings we speak become seeds that You can use to lead others to Jesus.

Help us never forget that behind every prophecy is a person who needs Your salvation.

Give us boldness, compassion, and urgency to point others to Christ.

May the words we share today become someone’s lifeline tomorrow.
