Wha Is the Meaning of the First Trumpet of Revelation?
The First Trumpet Sounds
Imagine the sound of the first trumpet echoing across the heavens.
John sees something terrifying: Hail and fire mixed with blood fall upon the earth.
The result isn’t symbolic discomfort. It is devastation. A third of the earth is burned. A third of the trees and the green grass is burned.
The first trumpet marks a dramatic escalation in God’s judgments during the Tribulation. But there’s something important we shouldn’t miss.
This isn’t happening randomly. Heaven remains in control.
The judgments of Revelation don’t unfold because God has lost control of His creation. They unfold because God is judging a world that has continued to reject Him.
And this is only the beginning.
“The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth.” (Revelation 8:7)

Behind Us:
The Seven Seals have unleashed escalating judgments. The prayers of God’s people have risen before Him, and heaven has responded.
Where we are:
Hail, fire, and blood fall upon the earth, burning a third of the earth and a third of the trees.
Ahead:
Six more trumpets will sound, bringing increasingly severe judgments upon the earth.
Key thought:
The first trumpet has sounded. What follows will reveal just how far God’s judgment will reach.
The Sounding of the First Trumpet (Revelation 8:6-7)

(Verses 6-7) The seven angels are equipped with their seven trumpets. They’re prepared to unleash the second set of judgments upon the earth’s inhabitants.
The first angel sounds his trumpet which unleashes a storm of hail, fire mixed with blood.
More terrible than what’s coming from the sky is the impact it’s leaving on the earth. The first trumpet of Revelation will bring a record breaking ecological apocalypse the likes of which this planet has never before seen.
John doesn’t simply describe destruction with the 1st trumpet. He gives us measurements.
A third of the earth was burned.
A third of the trees were burned up.
All green grass was burned up.
This is going to cause catastrophic ecological imbalances across the planet. It will severly impact food production and supply. It will begin to cripple the entire world.
Throughout scripture, hail has often been used in dispensing God’s judgment upon the earth.
Today, we see record breaking weather events delivering staggering amounts of hail. The extreme swings as well as storm intensity continues to rise.
The increasing size of hailstones has been a growing concern. Could today be a foreshadowing of the hailstorms of Revelation’s 1st trumpet? It appears quite certain, as we explore this Revelation passage.
“From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.” (Revelation 16:21)
Today’s scientist’s have a valid concern with the growing size of hailstones. If they would only recognize the God of creation and why this is happening, they would come to understand where all of this is truly headed.
We also see fire again used as a tool of judgment upon a sinful mankind. Peter explained it this way:
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.” (2 Peter 3:10)
Why does John describe the judgment as being mixed with blood?
Reflect & Apply:
The 1st trumpet reminds us how quickly the things we consider permanent can disappear.
Forests can burn.
Food supplies can collapse.
Cities can be destroyed.
The earth itself can shake.
What are you ultimately trusting to keep you secure?
Ask yourself:
- Am I trusting Christ—or the stability of this world?
- Am I prepared to meet Him?
- Am I praying for family and friends who don’t know Jesus?
- If Revelation is warning us about what is coming, am I taking that warning seriously?
God’s warnings are not meant to drive us into panic. They are meant to drive us toward Him.
Why Is Blood Mixed With the Judgment?
John records that he sees blood mixed with hail and fire that is raining down on earth. What’s the reason for this blood? Why has it become a part of the trumpet judgments? It’s not entirely clear why. But we can look back to try and find some answers.
Blood has played a significant role in the lives of the ancient Israelites. Leviticus reveals to us that God explained to the Israel the purpose of blood.
“‘I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people. 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. 12 Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.” (Leviticus 17:10-12)
Scripture teaches us that blood is the life within a living creature. The Israelites were taught early that eating blood was strictly forbidden. Also, the blood of a sacrificed animal was used as an atonement to cover up the sins of God’s people.
But there’s more.
First Trumpet of Revelation and the Blood of the Innocence
We learn more of the mixing of blood in the 1st trumpet if we go back even further to Cain and Abel, we see the effect that spilled blood of an innocent man has on God.
The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.” (Genesis 4:10)
But it’s not until we move forward to Jesus’ ministry where we see the Lord rebuke the religious leaders. He delivers an ominous warning for the spilling of innocent blood upon the earth.
“Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.” (Luke 11:50-51)
Scripture doesn’t explicitly explain why John sees blood mixed with the hail and fire. We shouldn’t claim more than the text tells us. But throughout Scripture, blood reminds us of both life and accountability for innocent bloodshed.

Unimaginable Devastation and Pain
In the approach to the Great Tribulation, the earth has already experienced unimaginable human and ecological devastation beginning with the 1st trumpet. War rages among nations and families as love disappears and betrayal spreads.
Crime and drug use have exploded. Store shelves are empty, economic collapse has gripped cities and towns, and famine is beginning to drive people to desperation. The deaths of 2 billion people have left the smell of blood in the air, driving animals from the wilderness to prey upon people.
Amid the chaos, the man the Bible calls the Antichrist emerges with what appears to be the answer to the world’s problems. He convinces people that he can end their suffering and calls them to place their trust in him.
He will devote the first half of the Tribulation to restoring order. In the process, he rises from political leader to world ruler, establishing his own kingdom of ten nations. Three will eventually break away, likely because they oppose his ambitions. (Daniel 7)
But his ambitions go far beyond political power. During the Great Tribulation, he will reveal his true identity and ultimate goals. (Daniel 11)
Meanwhile, the conventional wars ravaging the planet will likely escalate toward nuclear conflict as the midpoint approaches. Nuclear weapons may become part of the Antichrist’s strategy to gain the global power he needs to accomplish his ultimate desire.
And Scripture has warned us that a day like this is coming.
Malachi, the final Old Testament prophet to record God’s revelation, forewarned of this grim day:
“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.” (Malachi 4:1)
Reflect & Apply:
Revelation’s judgments are terrifying—but God has not stopped calling people to Himself.
Before the final judgments unfold, God sends witnesses, evangelists, and even an angel proclaiming the eternal gospel.
God’s warnings are an expression of His mercy.
If you know Christ, watch for the signs He warned us of and share it with others.
Share the gospel. Pray for the lost. Stay faithful.
And if you don’t know Christ, don’t wait for the trumpet judgments to begin.

Jesus Warned Us That Judgment Was Coming
Jesus didn’t give His Olivet Discourse to satisfy our curiosity about future disasters. He warned us so we would be ready. And He asked us to watch for the signs of these these warning.
- deception is at at a level unforeseen and growing with the advancement of AI.
- wars and rumors of wars, and tensions between nations grows
- famine is no longer just in third world countries but in our neighborhoods
- earthquakes are increasing in intesity and frequency across the globe
- persecution among Jews rapidly increasing and spreading across Christianity
- increasing distress leaving people perplexed

The first trumpet of Revelation is only the beginning.
The judgments will intensify as the remaining trumpets sound, revealing a world increasingly affected by God’s righteous judgment.

Closing Reflection: You Don’t Have to Be Here
Friends, imagine trying to survive as fire and hail rain down from the sky. A third of the earth is burned. Trees that once provided food and shelter are gone. The landscape is scarred, resources become increasingly scarce, and humanity struggles to survive in a world that has been radically changed.
And this is only the 1st trumpet judgment.
Yet you don’t have to face this judgment.
God has provided a way of escape through His Son, Jesus Christ. You don’t have to endure His coming wrath and hope to survive it. You can be saved from it—not through it.
Jesus Christ is the only One who can save you. Not your goodness or your religion. Not money or another person. Christ alone.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for providing a way of escape through Jesus Christ. Open our eyes to the reality of what is coming and give us the courage to warn others while there is still time.
Help us place our complete trust in Jesus—not ourselves, our works, or this world. Keep us faithful, watchful, and ready for His return when He comes to gather His Church.
Lord Jesus, save us from the coming wrath and use us to lead others to You.
