Jesus Prays for Discipleship… and for You
Few chapters in all of Scripture reveal the heart of Jesus more clearly than John 17.
Only hours before His arrest, betrayal, crucifixion, and death, Jesus doesn’t focus on Himself. He turns His eyes toward heaven and begins praying.
First, He prays for the eleven disciples standing beside Him.
These ordinary men would soon carry the gospel to the world. They would face persecution, suffering, imprisonment, and even martyrdom. They desperately needed God’s protection and strength.
But then something extraordinary happens. Jesus extends His prayer beyond the walls of the upper room.
He begins praying for every person who would one day believe through the message of these disciples.
That includes you.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, this prayer was spoken for you nearly two thousand years before you were born.
John 17 is not simply history. It is one of the most personal chapters in the entire Bible.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples (John 17:6-12)

(Verses 6-12) Jesus begins by praying specifically for the men the Father entrusted to Him during His earthly ministry.
He thanks the Father because they received God’s Word, believed that Jesus came from heaven, and remained faithful despite their weaknesses.
These disciples weren’t perfect. Peter would soon deny Him. The others would flee in fear.
Yet Jesus loved them, prayed for them, and entrusted them with carrying the gospel to the nations.
This reminds us that God doesn’t call perfect people. He transforms ordinary people who are willing to follow Him.
Jesus prepares to close the books on His three year ministry. A ministry that would set in motion an event the likes of which the world has never witnessed.
Jesus’ prayers for discipleship would send the flames of God’s word across the globe for generations to come. It would be a flame that no one could stop. It would grow to unimaginable proportions. Enough so that it would strike concern in Satan himself. This has caused him to rage in anger across the globe.
Satan’s ambitions were quickly destroyed at the resurrection of the perfect sacrificial Lamb, Jesus Christ.
Jesus shows us that discipleship begins in believing the Word of God. It comes in knowing the Father and knowing that the Son was sent by the Father. Who the Father has chosen, He has given to the Son. Discipleship begins with Christ.
Jesus prays specifically for His disciples. They’re about to embark on a monumental task of epic proportions in bringing the gospel. It will spread from Jerusalem to Samaria and to the rest of the world.
Imagine how uplifting it must’ve felt for these disciples. They listened to their Master and Teacher pray directly to the Father for them.

- Jesus prayed for imperfect disciples.
- He still uses imperfect disciples today.
- The question isn’t whether you’re perfect.
- The question is whether you’re willing to faithfully follow Him.
This Prayer Doesn’t Stop With the Eleven
At first glance, it appears Jesus is praying only for His closest disciples.
But don’t stop reading.
In just a few verses, Jesus opens His prayer to every future believer.
That means this chapter is far more than a prayer for Peter, John, James, and the apostles.
It becomes Jesus’ prayer for His entire Church throughout history.
Including us today.
Jesus Prays That His Disciples Remain in the World (John 17:13-19)
(Verses 13-19) With the imminent return of Christ to take His rightful seat at the throne of God, He prays for the strength of His chosen disciples.
They’re about to become separated. While He’s still in the world, He wants His joy to be complete in them upon His departure.
Christ signifies that while they’re still in the world, He prays that they’re kept safe. He doesn’t pray for their removal from the world. He fully knows the task they have ahead of them in spreading the gospel of Him crucified.
They will face tremendous hurdles and spiritual attacks from the evil one. He prays that God will remain with them through it all. This will be by the power of the Holy Spirit that will soon arrive to reside in them.
Jesus’ Prayers for Discipleship in the Coming Believers (John 17:20-26)
(Verses 20-26) Then Jesus says something astonishing.
“My prayer is not for them alone…” (John 17:20-26)
With those words, the prayer suddenly reaches beyond the upper room. Beyond Jerusalem. Beyond the first century and every generation.
Jesus begins praying for everyone who would believe through the testimony of His disciples. That includes every Christian alive today.
Long before you were born…
Before you ever opened a Bible…
Before you ever prayed your first prayer…
Jesus prayed for you.
He prayed that you would believe and that you would remain faithful in your belief.
He prayed that you would be united with other believers and that one day we would be with Him forever.
What incredible comfort to know that our Savior carried us in His heart before He carried the cross.

Jesus wasn’t praying only for Peter. Or John. Or James.
He was praying for every believer who would place their faith in Him through the message of the apostles. That means this prayer includes you.
How should that change the way you face fear, discouragement, temptation or uncertainty?
Your Savior has already prayed for you.
He Prayed for You and I
Just imagine for a moment. Let it really sink in. Over two thousand years ago, in the midst of His disciples in a quiet and secluded upper room somewhere in Jerusalem, our Savior prayed to our Father in heaven for us. Yes, us right now here in this time. He prayed that we might become citizens of heaven. We are just temporary travelers though this world.
He prayed for you and me so that when we came to hear the word, our hearts and minds would accept it and believe. He prayed that all the true believers would come together and gather as one family. A family that God has chosen as His own. A family He calls “children of God.”
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12)
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” (Galatians 3:26-27)
If we have been chosen by God, and the Son and the Father reside in us through the power of the Holy Spirit, what could ever take that away from us. Jesus prayed generations ago that nothing would ever take that away from us.
Jesus has made God known to us through the scriptures. Therefore, we reside in His love and our love for Him resides with Him and nothing can destroy that bond.
As these last days grow darker, today’s community of believers will need to stay strong and together. We must edify one another through our love for every brother and sister in Christ. Up to and including our day of departure to be gathered to our Savior so that we will be with Him always.

Jesus’ Prayer Is Still Being Answered Today
The world is growing darker. Biblical truth is increasingly rejected. Christians face growing opposition in many parts of the world.
Yet nothing happening today has taken Jesus by surprise.
On the very night before the cross, He prayed that His followers would remain faithful in a hostile world. That prayer still strengthens His Church today.
Every believer who stands for Christ and every church that faithfully teaches God’s Word and every disciple who shares the gospel…
is living out the very prayer Jesus prayed nearly two thousand years ago.
As we wait for Christ’s return, John 17 reminds us that we have not been forgotten.
Our Savior prayed for us long before we ever knew Him.
Closing Reflection: Will We Live as the Answer to Jesus’ Prayer?
John 17 is more than a record of what Jesus prayed nearly two thousand years ago.
It is a prayer that continues to shape every believer today.
On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed that His followers would know God’s Word, remain faithful in a hostile world, walk in unity, and make Him known until His work on earth was complete. He knew the darkness His disciples would face, yet He did not ask the Father to remove them from the world. He asked that they would be protected, sanctified by the truth, and faithful to the mission.
That same calling now belongs to us.
As the world grows increasingly hostile to biblical truth and the signs of the times continue to remind us that Christ’s return is drawing near, Jesus’ prayer becomes more urgent than ever. This is not the time for complacency, compromise, or silence. It is the time to stand firmly on God’s Word, encourage one another, boldly proclaim the gospel, and remain faithful until our King returns.
One day, the prayer Jesus prayed in the upper room will reach its glorious fulfillment. We will see Him face to face, be united with Him forever, and experience the fullness of His glory.
Until that day, may we live in such a way that our lives become a testimony that Jesus’ prayer is still being answered through His people.
The world desperately needs faithful disciples.
The gospel still must be proclaimed.
The hour is growing late.
May we be found faithfully carrying out the very mission Jesus prayed for us to fulfill until He comes.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, humbled by the incredible truth that before Jesus went to the cross, He lifted His eyes toward heaven and prayed not only for His disciples, but for all who would one day believe through their message. Thank You that, by Your grace, we are included in that prayer.
Lord, help us live as faithful disciples who honor the prayer Your Son prayed over His Church. Sanctify us by Your truth, fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and give us courage to stand firmly on Your Word in a world that grows darker each day. Guard our hearts from compromise and strengthen us to boldly proclaim the gospel while there is still time.
Unite Your people in love and truth so the world may see Christ through us. Open our eyes to every opportunity to share the hope that is found only in Jesus, and keep us faithful to the mission You have entrusted to us.
As we watch the signs of the times unfold, keep our hearts fixed on the glorious return of our King. May we be found faithful, bringing glory to Your name until the day faith becomes sight and we stand forever in the presence of the Savior who prayed for us before He gave His life for us.
