The New Jerusalem Dimensions Explained: Why God’s Holy City Is a Perfect Cube (Revelation 21:15-17)

New Jerusalem Dimensions: The Massive Holy City Where God Will Dwell With His People

The New Jerusalem Dimensions Explained (Revelation 21:15-17)

Bible Study

(Verses 15-17) John is no longer viewing the Holy City from a distance. Now the same angel that appeared to John in Revelation 17 steps forward with a golden measuring rod and reveals the new Jerusalem dimensions so enormous they stretch beyond human imagination.

The New Jerusalem is not merely a city. It is the eternal dwelling place of God with His redeemed people.

And its shape matters.

Infographic of the New Jerusalem dimensions in Revelation 21:15-17 showing a massive golden perfect cube measuring 1,400 miles long, wide, and high.

The city forms a perfect cube — the exact shape of the Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple. For thousands of years, God quietly embedded this pattern into Scripture. The place where His presence dwelled among His people pointed forward to something far greater still to come.

Then, Ezekiel 41 revealed the dimensions of this future Temple.

Now Revelation unveils the final reality.

The Holy of Holies was never just a room where the Spirit of God dwelt among His people. It was a preview of the eternal city where God Himself will dwell with His people forever.

In Revelation 21:15-17, the angel measures the New Jerusalem and reveals dimensions unlike anything humanity has ever seen.

Reflect and Apply:

The shape of the New Jerusalem is not random. God designed it to mirror the Holy of Holies — the place where His presence dwelled among His people.

Through Jesus Christ, believers no longer stand far away from God. One day we will live permanently in His presence.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I long for the presence of God more than the things of this world?
  • Am I living with eternity in view?
  • Have I treated salvation casually instead of urgently?

The New Jerusalem reminds us that God’s plan has always been to dwell with His redeemed people forever.

But the measurements become even more astonishing.

The Angel Reveals the Astonishing Size of the Holy City

Why does the angel present a measuring rod to show the new Jerusalem dimensions? Because the Holy City will be like nothing we’ve ever seen or ever will see or experience on this planet.

1,200 stadia is equivalent to about 1,400 miles or about 2,200 kilometers. Notice carefully. The dimensions of the new Jerusalem reveal that it’ll be 1,400 miles wide, 1,400 miles long, and 1,400 miles high. It’ll essentially be the shape of a cube.

If you were standing in the center of the City, you could travel east, west, north, or south for 700 miles before you would find yourself at one of the 12 gates of the City named after the 12 tribes of Israel. Not only that, but you could also venture 700 miles up or down before you would again find yourself at one of the City gates.

John is showing us that we will not be made of the flesh of these sinful bodies that we currently occupy on a temporal basis. We will have glorified bodies just as Christ did after His resurrection.

Our glorified bodies will no longer suffer corruption, weakness, pain, or death. The limitations of this fallen world will no longer govern life in the eternal kingdom.

The constraints of gravity and time that exist on this planet will not exist in the new Jerusalem. This will be a world created by God that will be beyond any human words could ever describe.

There will not even be a sun shining on the New Jerusalem.

“There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 22:5)

We’ll talk more about that in the last chapter, Revelation 22.

Reflect and Apply:

The overwhelming size of the New Jerusalem reveals the overwhelming greatness of God.

Human beings build cities to glorify themselves. God prepares an eternal city to bless His people.

Every dimension John records reminds us that eternity is real, heaven is prepared, and God keeps every promise He makes.

This world is temporary. The kingdom Christ prepares for His people is eternal.

Are you living for what will last forever?

Can the New Jerusalem Hold All of God’s People?

Will all believers in Jesus Christ fit into this Holy City? That’s a great question for anyone to ask.

First, we don’t really know how many people will be entering into the New Jerusalem.

  • We know true biblical Christians are a minority in this world.
  • We also know that a majority of the planet will perish in the seven year Tribulation period.
  • Many unbelievers will come to faith during Christ’s 1000 year reign on earth.
  • But what that number is, only God knows.

So the question remains. Will there be enough room within the dimensions of the new Jerusalem? Even enough room for those saved by God’s free and merciful gift of salvation by the end of the Tribulation?

Well, the height of the city changes everything.

The New Jerusalem Dimensions Are Far Larger Than Most Christians Realize

Let’s take a closer look based on the angel’s new Jerusalem dimensions given to John. We’ll use the United States for this example.

The contiguous United States is approximately 3.8 million square miles. Based on the angel’s dimensions, 1,400 miles long and 1,400 miles wide is about 1.9 million square miles. That would mean the new Jerusalem could fit the entire United States west of the Mississippi River or about half of the country.

But wait, the city dimensions are also 1,400 miles from top to bottom. Suddenly the scale becomes almost unimaginable. The new Jerusalem dimensions of 1,400 miles wide by 1,400 miles long by 1,400 high put the Holy City at 2.7 billion square miles.

If we look at the territory of the United States from a linear perspective, we could fit roughly 722 contiguous United States into the dimensions of the New Jerusalem. These dimensions were given to John by the angel. This is almost mind-blowing.

So if your thought of the New Jerusalem is a place hustling and bustling with people elbow to elbow trying to get around, you may want to rethink that idea. Remember, this is only the city of the new Jerusalem. This Holy City will be situated somewhere within the new earth and the new heaven.

The God of the New Jerusalem Dimensions is an Almighty God

Heavenly matters are often bigger than the human mind can comprehend.

Why is that?

Because these are heavy spiritual matters. Too heavy for our small minds to comprehend.

But our God is holy, just, merciful, faithful, and loving. He is the Almighty God of all creation. There is no other god like Him nor that could even compare to Him. None!

Friends, it’s my desire that this awakens your inherent longing for that day when we’ll be reunited with our loving Creator. Our Creator who desires to live among His creation. It certainly does for me.

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
“Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36)

Now the angel is about to take the structures of the New Jerusalem dimensions and reveal what is even more unfathomable to the human mind.

The New Jerusalem dimensions are not meaningless numbers hidden inside prophecy. They reveal the staggering reality of God’s eternal kingdom.

A real city.
A real inheritance with a real future for those redeemed by Jesus Christ.

John stands overwhelmed as the angel continues revealing the glory of the Holy City. And the deeper we move into Revelation 21, the clearer it becomes:

God is preparing something far beyond anything humanity has ever imagined.

The question is not whether the New Jerusalem is real.

The question is whether we are truly ready for the day when its gates finally open. Let’s go and take a look.

Closing Prayer

Lord God,
Awaken our hearts to live for Your eternal kingdom and not the fading things of this fallen world. Fix our eyes on the glory of the New Jerusalem and the promise of dwelling forever in Your presence.

Put in our hearts an urgency that time is short and preparation is now.

Strengthen our faith, deepen our longing for Christ’s return, and lead us to walk in holiness while there is still time.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
