The 5th Trumpet of Revelation: Who Opens the Abyss? (Revelation 9:1)

The 5th Trumpet of Revelation: Satan’s Last Stand Begins

The first four trumpets devastated the earth. The land, the sea, and the fresh waters were struck. The heavens were darkened.

Now the 5th trumpet of Revelation takes us somewhere completely different. The abyss is about to be opened.

Revelation 9:1 introduces a fallen star, a key, and a prison unlike anything John has described before.

And the question becomes:

Who is this fallen star—and what happens when the abyss is opened?

The apostles, Matthew and Luke, record two separate instances of Jesus giving us a glimpse into the distress that will descend on mankind during this time of Tribulation.

“Immediately after the distress of those days“ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Matthew 24:29)

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26)

Who Is the Fallen Star? (Revelation 9:1)

Bible Study Guide

(Verse 1) Immediately after the fifth trumpet sounds, John sees a star fall from the sky. Then someone gives the star the key to the abyss.

The star John sees symbolizes something. How do we know?

First, stars do not possess human characteristics. This star was given a key and opens the shaft to the abyss. As in Revelation and throughout the Bible, the star symbolizes a literal being.

We must carefully seek the proper interpretation. When we let the Bible interpret itself, we leave no room for personal opinions or additions to God’s Word. Many people stray from Scripture’s true literal meaning at this point..

If the star is a symbol of a literal being, how do we determine who this being is? In this case, the Bible reveals to us who this literal being is.

Second, the star falls from heaven indicating that this is likely a heavenly being. Meaning that it’s not a being of flesh but a spiritual being.

Let’s begin with the name of this celestial body that John sees falling out of the sky. It’s a star. Who does the Old Testament record as the one whose name is after a star?

Listen God’s words through Isaiah. Notice carefully the description he uses in this passage.

“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! (Isaiah 14:12)

Isaiah is speaking about an angel who was once considered among the greatest of all of God’s angels. Until this angel fell away from God and was cast down to earth. This angel is Lucifer, also known as Satan.

In Luke’s gospel, we read that even Jesus states to His disciples what He sees of Satan.

Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” (Luke 10:18)

Reflect & Apply:

Revelation 9 reminds us that there is a spiritual battle taking place behind what we can see.

Satan is real. Spiritual opposition is real. Judgment is real.

Yet Satan is not God’s equal.

He is a defeated enemy whose authority remains under God’s control.

That should change the way we live today.

  • Are you trusting Christ—or simply trying to control your own life?
  • Are you taking God’s warnings seriously—or assuming tomorrow will always look like today?

Prophecy should move us from curiosity to conviction.

Satan’s Last Stand Begins

The 5th trumpet of Revelation marks a dramatic turning point in the trumpet judgments.

Later, we’ll study more confirmation behind Satan as the star from heaven in Revelation 12.

“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Revelation 12:7-9)

Revelation 12 will give us a fuller picture of Satan’s expulsion from heaven. But Revelation 9 gives us a terrifying glimpse of what happens as his activity intensifies. Satan knows his time is limited.

His rebellion against God has not ended. His hatred of God and everything belonging to Him has not diminished.

But his freedom is still under God’s authority. That distinction matters. Satan is powerful—but he is not sovereign.

The 5th Trumpet of Revelation Opens the Abyss

Unlike the first four trumpet judgments, the 5th trumpet of Revelation shifts the focus toward a terrifying supernatural assault coming upon humanity.

John doesn’t just see a symbol of Satan falling from the sky. The text shows Satan receiving authority to open the Abyss.

Whatever the precise identity of the figure, one truth is unmistakable:

Satan’s activity remains subject to God’s authority. He doesn’t seize the key. He is given the key.

The English word abyss comes from the Greek, abussos. The word “abyss” is found nine times in the Bible. Seven of those times are in the book of Revelation.

When the 5th trumpet of Revelation is sounded Jesus gives us a glimpse of the abyss.

Luke 8 gives us an important glimpse into this spiritual realm. When Jesus encountered the demon-possessed man known as Legion, the demons begged Him not to order them into the Abyss.

“When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. 30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.” (Luke 8:27-31)

Luke’s account shows us something important about the Abyss: demons knew of it, feared being sent there, and understood it as a place of confinement.

Revelation now takes us further.

The fifth trumpet will reveal what happens when that prison is opened. Naturally, Satan’s first inclination is to unleash his army of demons. This is to advance Satan’s last stand before his defeat at the hands of Christ. This won’t occur until the end of the Tribulation.

The key has been given and the Abyss is about to open.

And what comes out will be unlike anything humanity has ever experienced.

Revelation Warns Us Because God Wants Us to Respond

Revelation contains terrifying judgments. But God’s purpose isn’t simply to frighten us.

The warning itself is an expression of mercy.

God tells us what is coming so we will recognize the seriousness of sin, understand the reality of judgment, and turn to Jesus Christ while there is still time.

Prophecy isn’t given merely to scare us. It is given to wake us up.

Closing Reflection: We Are Fighting More Than We Can See

One of the greatest mistakes we can make when trying to understand the world around us is to look only at what we can see.

Wars. Violence. Hatred. Deception. Moral corruption. The rejection of God. These things have visible causes and human consequences. But Scripture tells us there is also a spiritual dimension operating behind the scenes.

Paul gives us this warning:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
(Ephesians 6:12)

If we reject the reality of Satan and the spiritual world, we cannot fully understand the spiritual aspect of the evil taking place around us. We may see the actions of people, governments, and nations, but miss the spiritual battle taking place beyond what our eyes can see.

This is why Revelation 9 matters.

The 5th trumpet of Revelation takes us beyond earthly catastrophe and pulls back the curtain on a supernatural realm that will face judgment. Satan and demonic forces are not imaginary characters in a story. Revelation presents them as real spiritual enemies operating under God’s ultimate authority.

Understanding this doesn’t mean blaming every evil act directly on Satan. Human beings remain responsible for their choices. But it does mean recognizing that evil is more than a human problem—it is also a spiritual battle.

And if we understand the battle, we better understand why we need Christ.

We cannot fight a spiritual battle with human strength alone. We need Jesus.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Open our eyes to the spiritual battle taking place around us. Help us recognize the influences that seek to deceive, discourage, tempt, and pull us away from You.

Give us discernment to recognize evil, wisdom to respond to it, and strength to stand firm in Your truth. When spiritual attacks come against us, remind us that our strength does not come from ourselves—it comes from You.

Clothe us with the armor You have given us. Guard our minds, protect our hearts, strengthen our faith, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

And Lord, give us courage to teach others about this unseen battle. Help us warn them without fear, speak truth with love, and point them to the only One who has already won the victory.

Keep us watchful, faithful, and standing.

In the powerful name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
