The Harvest Is Plentiful: Jesus Teaches His Disciples About Evangelism (John 4:27-42)

Jesus Gives a Lesson on Evangelism. In this passage, we see how Jesus teaches important principles about how to share your faith with others and why He uses the phrase, “the harvest is plentiful.”

The Samaritan woman arrived at the well as an outcast. Minutes later, she became one of the first evangelists in the New Testament.

After meeting Jesus, she immediately left her water jar behind and rushed back to town to tell others about the Messiah. As crowds began streaming toward the well, Jesus used the moment to teach His disciples a timeless lesson about evangelism, faith, and the urgency of the harvest.

Later in the chapter, Jesus would perform another miraculous sign, healing a royal official’s son from a distance and demonstrating that true faith trusts His word even before seeing the results.

What Does Jesus Teach About Evangelism in John 4?

Jesus teaches that evangelism begins by recognizing that people are spiritually ready to receive the gospel. Using the image of a harvest field, Jesus explains that believers are called to share God’s truth and participate in gathering souls into His kingdom.

How a Few Simple Words Turned Into a Harvest of Plenty

Bible Study Guide

(Verse 27-30) We can only imagine that after Jesus reveals himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well, her heart grows with excitement. We know this because she left her water jar at the well and ran back to town without it. She couldn’t get back to town fast enough to tell everyone that she had found the Messiah.

“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29)

What was about to happen, Jesus perfectly planned. His disciples return to Him after going into town to purchase food for everyone. At this point, everyone is probably hungry.

Reflect & Apply:

The woman came to the well focused on water. After meeting Jesus, she forgot about the very reason she came.

Her heart grew two sizes that day.

When Christ changes a person’s heart, priorities change. What once seemed important suddenly becomes secondary to knowing Him and sharing Him with others.

(Verses 31-34) The disciples attention is on food, especially getting Jesus fed as He waited for them to return. Jesus has three short years to spread the message of the kingdom of heaven. And also to prepare His disciples for taking over His evangelism work.

He’s clear with them that the only food that concerns Him is doing the will of His Father in heaven. Unknown to the disciples, that work of doing the will of the Father is about to come on them really quickly.

Why Jesus Teaches that the Harvest is Plentiful?

(Verses 35-38) Jesus references a Jewish quote, “It’s still four months until harvest.” This indicates the waiting period from the time of planting up to the harvest. But Jesus says that today there will be no waiting because the harvest is plentiful.

By now the Samaritan women has spread the word of meeting the Messiah at the well. The message spreads fast and the people of Samaria start heading toward the well to see for themselves.

As Jesus tells His disciples to look out onto the fields for they are ripe for the harvest, they see crowds coming their way. It’s time for the disciples to get a lesson in evangelism. Souls that need to be saved are approaching them quickly and the harvest is plentiful.

What a sight that must’ve been for the disciples. As Jesus commanded them to look, there in the distance were those coming to hear the Messiah. We don’t know for sure how many, but it could’ve been several hundred or even thousands.

Many came to see Jesus because of what the Samaritan woman said. Many came to believe that He is the Savior of the World for the words He spoke to them.

Reflect & Apply:

Jesus saw opportunities where His disciples saw ordinary people.

Every day we pass coworkers, neighbors, friends, and family members who need the hope found in Christ. Friends, even today the harvest is plentiful.

Are you seeing the harvest of souls around you needing to be pointed to Christ?

Why Was the Samaritan Woman So Effective?

One of the most remarkable aspects of this story is how quickly God used the Samaritan woman to impact others. Moments earlier, she was an outcast drawing water alone. Yet after encountering Jesus, she became the instrument God used to bring an entire community to hear the Messiah.

So why was the Samaritan woman so effective?

She Shared What Jesus Had Done for Her

The Samaritan woman didn’t return to town with a theological sermon or a carefully prepared message. She simply told people about her encounter with Jesus.

“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29)

Her testimony was personal, authentic, and centered on Christ.

She Pointed People to Jesus

Notice that she didn’t try to convince everyone herself. Instead, she invited them to come and see Jesus for themselves.

Effective evangelism isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about pointing people to the One who does.

Her Life Had Been Changed

The woman arrived at the well carrying shame and spiritual emptiness. She left with hope, purpose, and joy. People could see that something had happened.

A transformed life is often one of the most powerful witnesses for Christ.

She Acted Immediately

The Samaritan woman didn’t wait until she knew more. She didn’t delay until she felt qualified. As soon as she encountered Jesus, she shared the good news with others.

Many believers hesitate because they feel unprepared. Yet God often uses ordinary people who are simply willing to tell others what Christ has done in their lives.

God Uses Unexpected People

By worldly standards, the Samaritan woman seemed like an unlikely choice to reach a city. Yet God delights in using people that others overlook.

Her story reminds us that no one is too broken, too sinful, or too insignificant to be used by God for His glory.

Reflect & Apply:

The Samaritan woman didn’t have years of Bible training or a perfect past. She simply met Jesus and told others about Him.

Who in your life needs to hear what Christ has done for you? Sometimes the most powerful testimony isn’t a polished presentation—it’s a changed life pointing people to the Savior.

There’s no need to complicate your testimony. How to share your faith can be a simple task. See the simple steps below on how to share your faith. ↓

How to Share Your Faith Like the Samaritan Woman

The Samaritan woman didn’t attend a training seminar or spend years preparing for ministry before telling others about Jesus. She simply shared what she had experienced. Her example shows that every believer can be a witness for Christ.

Simple Lessons from the Samaritan Woman

  • Tell your story. Share how Jesus has changed your life and what He means to you.
  • Point people to Jesus. The Samaritan woman didn’t draw attention to herself—she invited others to come and see Christ.
  • Don’t wait until you know everything. She didn’t have all the answers, but she shared what she knew.
  • Trust God with the results. Her job was to tell others; God was responsible for changing hearts.
  • Look for opportunities in everyday life. God used an ordinary trip to a well to reach an entire community.
  • Remember that anyone can be used by God. If God could use the Samaritan woman, He can use you.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for seeking us when we were lost and for loving us even when we were far from You. Like the Samaritan woman, help us to recognize Jesus for who He truly is and to drink deeply from the living water He alone provides.

Open our eyes to see that the harvest is plentiful all around us. Fill us with compassion for those who do not know You, and give us the courage to share what Christ has done in our lives. May our words, actions, and testimony point others to the Savior.

Lord, strengthen our faith to trust Your Word, follow Your will, and boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
In His precious name we pray, Amen.
