The Works of Satan Revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12)

How Does Satan Work From Eden to the End Times—and Why Discernment Is Critical Today

Bible Study Guide

How Does Satan Work? (2 Thessalonians 2:9)

(Verses 9) It began in the Garden of Eden. It will reach its pinnacle in the Tribulation. It has always been Satan’s most powerful weapon—deception.

He deceived Adam and Eve to think they were doing what was good in the eyes of God. He continues to deceive today. AI will be his most powerful platform. It will bring unprecedented evil into our world which already has normalized evil.

It was the very first warning Jesus gave as He began to deliver His Olivet Discourse on the Mount of Olives.

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.” (Matthew 24:4)

Then Jesus describes Satan this way in the gospel of John as He speaks to the Pharisee’s of His day:

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)

Deception will reach its peak in the Tribulation. The Antichrist, under the power of Satan will deceive the world to think he’s the man with the plan for the world’s problems. They will kill him and bring him back to life. This will be an attempt to imitate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

He will set himself up in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Then he will demand to be worshiped as God.

How the Works of Satan Deceive Those Who Are Perishing (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11)

(Verse 10) In this verse, Paul points to a specific group of unbelievers that are perishing. He calls out people who have not only been deceived by the works of Satan. But they have chosen to believe the lie and not to believe the truth.

“and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10)

Those that are perishing that Paul points to have willfully chosen to oppose God and therefore they hold onto the lie. Understanding this helps us to make sense of God’s next move in verse 11.

(Verse 11) Paul states that God sends them strong delusion (spiritual blindness) so that they can’t see the truth. Essentially, He gives them over to their own willful unbelief.

“For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie…” (2 Thessalonians 2:11)

This can be difficult to make sense when it comes from the God of creation who desires that no one should perish, but all would come to repent and be saved. This is not God causing them to sin. It’s God allowing them to live in their choice of sin unfettered. This is mankind’s choice and not God’s.

What is the Lie?

The lie is any doctrine that opposes the truth of God’s Word and His word alone. It’s not something that opposes the words of men, such as organized religions.

The most dangerous lies are the ones that oppose God and have you turn your attention to things other than Christ. Today, the pulpits are filled with lies. Pastor’s leading their people unknowingly in a false direction thinking all the time that they’re being led to Christ.

“Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.” (1 John 2:21-22)

“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” (1 John 4:20)

The Works of Satan Delight In the Sins of Mankind (2 Thessalonians 2:12)

(Verse 12) Paul brings emphasis to those who are perishing for their choice of willfully denying the truth. The lie of how Satan works becomes more than just a choice for those perishing. It becomes something they delight in.

“and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:12)

We see these people everywhere today more and more, unabashedly shameless of their sexual immorality and sins of idolatry. This rising tide of evil will continue to increase as we approach the final hour and watch all of prophecy come together like never before.

It’s happening just as God perfectly spoke through all the prophets and His Son Jesus Christ. Don’t let anyone deceive you!

Closing Reflection

The greatest of all the works of Satan has never been brute force—it has always been deception. From the beginning, Satan has sought to twist God’s Word, not destroy it outright. In the last days, that deception will reach unprecedented levels. As technology advances and AI grows more powerful, mankind will attempt to reshape truth itself, even daring to rewrite the Bible to fit human desires. This is not progress; it is rebellion disguised as enlightenment.

To understand how does Satan work is to recognize his strategy: distort truth just enough to make error believable. In the days ahead, discernment will no longer be optional. It will be essential for spiritual survival. Those who do not know God’s Word will be vulnerable to lies that look holy, sound wise, and feel convincing.

As we approach the rapture and the coming Tribulation, only those anchored firmly in Scripture and led by the Holy Spirit will stand unshaken. Truth will remain—but only for those who refuse to let it be rewritten.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We come before You in humility and reverence, knowing that apart from Your truth we are easily led astray. Open our eyes to the schemes of the enemy and guard our hearts against deception in all its forms. In these days of increasing darkness, anchor us firmly in Your Word—the unchanging, eternal truth that no power of man or machine can alter.

Holy Spirit, sharpen our discernment. Teach us to recognize error even when it appears righteous, and give us courage to stand for truth when the world celebrates lies. Strengthen us to walk in obedience, to love what You love, and to reject every counterfeit that opposes Your will.

Lord Jesus, keep us watchful and ready. As we await Your return, help us remain faithful, sober-minded, and fully clothed in righteousness. May our lives reflect Your light in a deceived world, and may we hold fast to the truth until the day You call us home.
In Your holy and victorious name we pray, Amen.
